Storage Devices
Storage Devices, also referred to as storage medium, is any computing hardware that is capable of holding information. It is used to store, port and extract data files and objects. It can hold and store information both temporarily and permanently, and can be internal or external to a computer, server or any similar computing device. Without a storage device, your computer would not be able to save any settings or information and would be considered a dumb terminal.
Storage devices are one of the core components of any computing device. They store virtually all the data and applications on a computer, except hardware firmware. They are available in different form factors depending on the type of underlying device. For example, a standard computer has multiple storage devices including RAM, cache, a hard disk, an optical disk drive and externally connected USB drives.

There are two main types of storage devices:
- Primary Storage Devices- are internal devices which store information temporarily such as RAM.
- Secondary Storage Devices- can be either internal or external devices which which stores information permanently such as a hard drive.
Common examples of Storage devices
Optical Storage Devices: Uses lasers and lights to read and write data.
Magnetic Storage Devices: Most common types of storage used with computers today and is the technology computer hard drives use. Flash Memory Devices: A cheaper and more efficient solution to magnetic storage. Cloud Storage: Growing method of storing data online in order to access in from more than one device. |
